Divergent By Veronica Roth

I am currently halfway through the book Divergent by Veronica Roth. Beatrice a 16 year old girl is faced with the decision of leaving her family for her own good or staying with them and living an Abnegation lifestyle. Society is divided up into five factions. the Duantless (the brave), Abnegation(the selfless), Amity (the kind & peaceful), Erudite (the knowledgeable), and Candor (the honest). She realizes that she is not selfless enough to be Abnegation. Beatrices test results are inconclusive though. She could either be Abnegation, Duantless, or Erudite. Beatrice chooses Duantless. As she goes through initiation she learns about her strength and how she can use being divergent to her advantage. She finds herself mixed up in a romance with a faction transfer who also came from Abnegation. The line I find most significant in this book so far is, "I think we've made a mistake," he says softly. "We've all started to put down the virtues of the other factions in the process of bolstering our own. I don't want to do that . I want to be brave, and selfless and smart, and kind, and honest,'' (Roth 405). I find this quote very significant because it shows how the main characters which are Tris and Tobias are going to change society or so go against it. I predict that they will fight against the government and start a revolution towards change for the better. I think that people will become all of the qualities that Tobias wants to be and Tris who is a Divergent will use that to her advantage in the revolution.

I just started reading this book and it is very interesting to say the least. The setting of my book occurs in the future in Chicago. People are separated into Factions based on their personalities to prevent war. Chicago has changed a lo;t an example of the setting described in detail is, "The gaps between the buildings narrow and the roads are smoother as we near the heart of the city. The building that was once called the Sears Tower-we call it the Hub-emerges from the fog, a black pillar in the skyline. I have never been on a train, though they never stop running and there are tracks everywhere" (Roth 4). This quote shows that where she lives is towards the outer city and its jam packed with people and buildings. They use trains a lot I'm not sure why though because its the future but I am guessing that it is a subway that the narrator is talking about. Another example of imagery in the setting is; "The train whistle blares, the sound resonating in my chest. The light fixed to the front of the train clicks on and off as the train hurtles past the school. As the last few cars pass, a mass exodus of young men and women in dark clothing hurl themselves from moving cars, some dropping and rolling, others stumbling before they gain their balance, (Roth 7). This quote is describing how it is normal for kids to jump off cars and moving trains. These kids are part of the faction called the Duantless which means the brave. Their job is to protect the city gates from intruders on the outside.They wear all black and have lots of piercings and tattoos.

This Video sums up what my summer reading book The Good Thief was about. It describes with detail and shows pictures to help you understand what the stories about. It gets you interested and leaves you hanging, I would recommend this book to everyone.

Hannah Tinti is a young woman who grew up in Salem, Massachusetts. She currently lives in New York and teaches writing. She is also the co-founder and editor of One Story magazine. She also has a short storycollection called Animal Crackers. This collection has sold in 16 countries. Another book that she has written is called The Good Thief. This book is an Alex Award winning book and the video above describes it in detail. Tinti is a very mystical writer, she describes her book as adventurous and what inspired her to write it was her love for action-packed mystery books when she was a kid. She has also won two other awards called the Johns Sargent Sr. First Novel Prize and the Quality Paperback Book Club’s New Voices Award. In my opinion she is a talented new author with great plot ideas and skills to keep you wanting to keep reading the book. She only is the other of two books in total so that's why I described her as a new author. She writes fiction books and volunteers to speak at colleges a lot to inspire young readers and writers. She is certainly an inspiring person and I think she is a great author as well. In the video Hannah Tinti goes on to describe her best-selling book The Good Thief, she describes the setting, plot and characters. I hope you all consider reading this book!
