Divergent By Veronica Roth

I just started reading this book and it is very interesting to say the least. The setting of my book occurs in the future in Chicago. People are separated into Factions based on their personalities to prevent war. Chicago has changed a lo;t an example of the setting described in detail is, "The gaps between the buildings narrow and the roads are smoother as we near the heart of the city. The building that was once called the Sears Tower-we call it the Hub-emerges from the fog, a black pillar in the skyline. I have never been on a train, though they never stop running and there are tracks everywhere" (Roth 4). This quote shows that where she lives is towards the outer city and its jam packed with people and buildings. They use trains a lot I'm not sure why though because its the future but I am guessing that it is a subway that the narrator is talking about. Another example of imagery in the setting is; "The train whistle blares, the sound resonating in my chest. The light fixed to the front of the train clicks on and off as the train hurtles past the school. As the last few cars pass, a mass exodus of young men and women in dark clothing hurl themselves from moving cars, some dropping and rolling, others stumbling before they gain their balance, (Roth 7). This quote is describing how it is normal for kids to jump off cars and moving trains. These kids are part of the faction called the Duantless which means the brave. Their job is to protect the city gates from intruders on the outside. They wear all black and have lots of piercings and tattoos.

  4. Based on what I read from your blog, this book sounds good. It is a little sad that families and loved ones have been separated by personality just to prevent war, though.
